I avoid both ATI and nVidia, at least where proprietary kernel modules are needed for 3D; I currently prefer Intel graphics hardware or, in its absence, older ATI cards with open-source 3D support.
If you're using the nVidia-supplied taintware, you could try nv instead if you don't mind losing accelerated 3D graphics.
