Our experiences were very similar. I installed feisty as a new
installation and during the process created an "nholtz" account for
myself. After installation, I repointed my newly created account to use
my personal files from before, by manually editting /etc/passwd and
changing the home directory. So in effect, my account became like your
friends account, not touched by the update or install procedure, and
then my konqueror was broken just as it was in your friends account.
So it does look like, as you say,
"the upgrade tool works only on the current user's profile ? That would be
a
major problem, but one that not necessarily many people would see."
I really don't trust installtion or update procedures with my personal
file space, so I always try to keep them out of the way and hidden
during new installations.
I also noticed a number of different names in the profiles on a couple
of different machines, and I don't remember ever changing them before
... its a bit of a mystery.
Glad you got it to work. Those broken windows were a real pain for a
few days ...
