Public bug reported:

Directory /var/log/lightdm is owned by user and group root. Only root is
allowed to write this directory. Since lightdm tries to write its
logfile to this directory this fails, since lightdm does not have
necessary rights to write /var/log/lightdm.

Simply change:
# chgrp lightdm
# chmod g+w lightdm

will solve this issue.
The directory shall be created with the correct rights set allowing lightdm
writing its logfile there.
