I had an identical problem, using on old "empty" disk I remembered as an NTFS disk + 1 empty brand new 2 TB (NTFS) hard drive. The installer told me I had 10.10, and then it died. I got around *that* by using the "Try Ubuntu" button and (after several tries) choosing the "Install Ubuntu 11.10" button. It installed *somehow*, but has no sound and no way I can find to check or adjust the audio levels. Under 11.04 I could go to system -> preferences -> sound and do all that was needed. But now I cannot find any of the needed steps and indeed cannot even find what steps are needed with the new 11.10 interface. I'm left wondering whether the new interface is really as retarded as it seems - or maybe *I'm* the retarded one.
