Exactly the same situation as Joachim, but I'll expand a little.

The red icon suggests unmet dependencies but like Joachim, "$ sudo apt-get 
install -f" did not fix the problem.
I uninstalled Brasero and that message went away, but I still got the 
'__init__' msg and the update manager still messes up.
When offered the partial upgrade popup, cancelling gives: "Software index is 
broken".
Console deletion of the apt lists files and apt-get update did not fix the 
issue.
Again, subsequent updates and upgrades via console seem fine but again still 
the problem.
