Public bug reported:

The keyboard backlight on my Sony Vaio has been working ever since I
installed 10.04. Since the upgrade to 11.10, the backlight no longer
comes on. (Judging by forum comments, this problem does not seem to be
specific to Sony laptops).

I can still enable the backlight by entering "echo 1 | sudo tee
/sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop/kbd_backlight" in a terminal, but
there doesn't seem to be any other way to enable it.

The expected behavior would be for the backlight to be enabled by
default, just like it was prior to 11.10.
