My problem was related to the Evolution Integration plugin.  Can you try
to start pidgin without any plugins running?

Please close all running instances of pidgin/purple, make a backup of
your ~/.purple directory, then remove ~/.purple/prefs.xml and restart
pidgin.  This will disable plugins.
