There is a chance the degradation in some cases is caused by the
composite rendering timer drifting out of sync with your monitor.  And
it does, I know that for certain. When this happens, tearing becomes
more visible and the frame rate can go down to half of what it should
be.

The fix will be available for testing in a PPA after it's been approved
by more reviewers... It will be worth trying at least.
