Looks like it's a BIOS glitch, not a bug in GRUB. Although Windows XP is no longer on this netbook - it only runs Lubuntu now :) - after you had booted up Windows XP and booted up Ubuntu or vice-versa, after the extra reboot which would happen, the BIOS summery screen would say something like "Update Success", if you removed the Samsung logo from the BIOS boot screen.
It seems to be a buggy BIOS rather than GRUB. I did update the BIOS (which could only be done within Windows XP) and no further updates to the BIOS have been released since then.
