It doesn't work in quite the same way for me as described. For me, if I pull the mouse up completely outside the window, etc, I don't necessarily see this effect. However, if I slowly pull the mouse up a pixel or two outside the text area, I can reproduce this quite easily.
Looks like an error in how emacs detects the text location being clicked.
