from the lockup perspective we are talking on the order of 5 minutes.
I've gone through this procedure before so I have an idea what seems
normal, and this was way too long.

In terms of partitions I had 4. They were swap, boot, ., and home in
that order all ext3 partition types except for swap. The problem seemed
to occur with the /home parition. No partition was over 40 Gbytes and
the total capacity of the harddrive was approximately 60 Gbytes. Since I
removed all partitions and told the partitioner to just use one large
partition I did mix it up a bit. BTW, as stated above, that failed using
the Ubuntu partitioner.

My point in mentioning this problem at all was to highlight the fact
that the Ubuntu mke2fs failed to correct the problem regardless of the
partitioning arrangement, yet the one on the Knoppix 5.1 cd worked just
fine. It was particularly frustrating since they were both the same
versions. I don't know how you will be able to reproduce the problem,
but good luck!!!
