Followup to the earlier report. When I am experiencing this problem, the other dash items, "Media Apps", "Internet Apps" and "More Apps" are unresponsive. Clicking them makes them flash, but nothing new is displayed.
This seems to be some kind of complete failure of the dash to read/generate its internal app database, something like that.
