I apologize for not responding sooner. I initially had to reinstall ubuntu to make my system usable, and had not had this issue since doing so. I did experience another issue very similar this last weekend, but believe it may have been caused by some weirdness with Scroll Lock or some unknown shortcut key related to my keyboard, which has been resolved. As the system has been reloaded, I don't have any way to reproduce the issue. I should have made a full image of the hard drive at the time, so that it could be further explored, but I unfortunately did not. I do appreciate your response.
