Thanks for your bug report. I've experienced this same problem as well,
as have a lot of other users. Unfortunately it seems like CCSM is flaky
in 11.10 right now, so I would advise against using it. I was only able
to fix this issue on my system by reinstalling, but there are a couple
things you can try:

Alternatively you can boot into an Ubuntu-2d session and install an
alternate desktop environment by running software center from a
terminal, which you can bring up by pressing ctrl+alt+t and typing 'sudo
software-center'. This won't bring Unity back, but KDE, Gnome 3.2, and
XFCE are great alternatives.
