Indeed the log files wouldn't be there anymore, and sadly without them we can't really determine the problem with any certainty. It is possible that the cd image may have been corrupted at the time of install, did you happen to check the integrity of the .iso file and the CD before installing? If you didn't, could you possibly burn another CD, this time checking the .iso file for defects before burning the cd, checking the cd for defects when you boot into it, and then attempting the install process again?
