Hi, thanks for the reply!  After some more updates, it works again.  I don't
know what fixed it exactly. It's possible that I wound up with a new version
of ~/.emacs along the way as a result of one of the updates, but I think I
would have noticed it, since I have made a number of changes away from the
default configuration.
