Public bug reported:

Feisty 7.04 + Xgl + Beryl

The Xgl proccess is correctly killed (linked to gnome-session
termination) when a user logs off but the Xgl locking remains. This fact
causes a message saying that the /tmp/.X1-lock cannot be created at
following logon attempts by other users.

This is mainly due to the fact that the file /tmp/.X1-lock is owned by
the previous (=first) user running Xgl. As for the Xorg process locked
by /tmp/.X0-lock, the file .X1-lock likely should be handled and owned
by the root. This problem also applies to the file /tmp/.X11-unix/X1.
Elsewise they both should be deleted at logoff.

A workaround for me to make it work until fixed is as follows:

Edit the file /etc/gdm/PostSession/Default and include the following two lines
at the end
  rm /tmp/.X1-lock
  rm /tmp/.X11-unix/X1
