Thank you for the response. I wasn't able to make it to the installer; when trying to boot into Ubuntu from the CD, it gave me an error and sent me to the terminal.
It turned out that my video card is an ATI mobility X1400. and the installer didn't pick that up for some reason. I ended up installing Ubuntu 6, upgrading to 7, and installing my drivers from the terminal (once I upgraded, I was stuck with just the terminal again). Once I installed them and rebooted, everything worked fine. I understand that different distributions of laptops have slightly different video cards, so Ubuntu 7 may work fine on some ATI Mobility X1400's and not well on others (mine's a Dell Inspiron e1505). If there's some way I can pitch in and test future distributions on my laptop before they are officially released, I'd be very interested.
