This is very much a kernel bug. I just installed CentOS 6 inside an LXC
container on one of the affected systems and downloads in that container
also get corrupted:

error: inflate: data stream error (incorrect header check)MiB/s
fatal: pack has bad object at offset 72897475: inflate returned -3
