New info: My computer has two 3.5 speaker jacks. I have a 2.0 speaker
system with USB for power connected to one of the jacks. A pair of
headphones are connected to the other jack. I have both devices
connected daily and adjust volumes to switch from one to the other
device.

It seems that after the upgrade, I can't have both devices connected.
When I unplug the headphones, I get sound in the speakers, but it
disappears when plugging in the headpghones again. While the actual
problem persists, the workaround (switching between plugged/unplugged
headphones) is simple enough that I consider this issue solved as far as
I am concerned.
