Seems I was wrong and gave the patch too little testing. This is still a problem on Oneiric. On the left, you can see check-new-release-gtk with untranslated strings in its main window and a notification window, which shows untranslated strings from do-release-upgrade. This latter window shows up translated when update-manager shows it, this is on the right.
