I've made sure that all updates are installed. This is not a clean install (an update from 11.04).
I've tried getting it to do it again and found that this occurs when my laptop is suspended while plugged into the TV. When I come back out from being suspended and then disconnect the TV, the launcher doesn't load without logging out and back in. If I plug the TV back in, the launcher works on the TV. Hopefully that helps!
