Freemat is completely dead as a matter of fact.

It hangs indefinitely at startup. The symptom reported above is the sign
that when freemat starts it spawn a gui process (which works) while its
processing thread hangs.

This can be better evidenced by starting freemat without its gui as
freemat -noX or freemat -nogui or freemat -e. In this case, freemat
simply hangs.
