I have the same problem - after booting up my laptop and logging into Ubuntu 11.10 the first thing I do is starting some programs. I don't keep them all in the left pane, so I hit the super key and search for "firefox", "chromium" or "amarok", but the apps are not shown, only the results of the file lens are shown. It seems that the app lens isn't ready right after starting Ubuntu, as the app lens doesn't show up at the bottom when you press the super key (only the home lens, file and music lens are shown). I always have to press super key multiple times, i.e. open/close unity multiple times until the app lens is ready (and shows up at the bottom). Ubuntu: 11.10 - 64 bit, Unity: 4.24.0-0ubuntu2b1, Kernel: 3.1.1-030101-generic
