Possibly I hadn't fully gotten out of whatever state the hibernation had
put the machine in. At some point it refused to boot.  unplugged it, and
removed the battery, reinserted both, and it was able to boot up. It
then worked fine with the 3.2rc kernel. I then tested the 3.0.6 kernel
(which includes the wlagn driver) and it continued to work. suspend with
the 3.0.6 kernel didn't cause any problems. I didn't try hibernate
again.
