+1 for Maverick. It's still supported, and without getting into a long off-thread debate about Unity and Gnome3, Maverick is still supported by your own admission .. and it seems all that's needed is a (re)build of the .deb that works for the other distros.
... or I could downgrade to Lucid but that seems like a huge effort just to fix this one issue.
