This sounds like debian bug 374026, which is fixed in xserver 1.3 although in that case the user wasn't able to use ctrl-alt-backspace. xserver 1.3 is now in Gutsy, so please test and verify the fix works for you. If not, please reopen and we'll dig into it further.
