Also, when I try to mount the drive, I get the following error:
$ sudo mount -v /dev/hda
mount: block device /dev/hda is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hda,
missing codepage or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
