The problem was that Gnome 3 is going in this dumbed down direction anyway and 
with less consideration of what people actually want (outside of the Gnome 
gang).  I think they are unhappy with distros such as Ubuntu using and updating 
their code without actively maintaining it.  Unity brings control back into the 
Ubuntu project.  

While Unity's starting point is as bad as Gnome 3's end result it is
only the starting point and will evolve (hopefully) in a direction that
users want rather than what programmers want.

This is not really the place for this old tired argument to flame up again.  
There are plenty of other places to get involved with that.  This thread is 
supposed to be about getting Ubuntu and the wider Gnu&Linux more widely 
accepted on desktops and mobile devices.
