I've tried to reproduce this with an oneiric server and natty client,
but couldn't.
My only guess would be that root's ssh key is not in /root/.ssh/id_rsa,
or that it has a password and ssh succeeds only because the key is in
the ssh-agent keyring.
Could you try sshing into a your natty client, making sure not to start
an ssh agent, then becoming root and sshing to the server?
