mpwalter, it would be very interesting to know if it works with the Mandriva 
grub, for instance doing something like this:
1. Try installing only the boot loader from Mandriva, by booting the Mandriva 
grub, go in command mode and run "root" to choose the Ubuntu partition and run 
"setup" to install the boot loader.
2. Use the Mandriva stage1.5 as well, by running "setup" after choosing 
Mandriva "root" partition again, and then boot into command mode and pick the 
"configfile" from the Ubuntu partition while keeping Mandriva as "root".

Please don't set up any raid if you haven't yet, because it would be
good to figure out this problem separately and confirm that dmraid is
not to blaim.
