It's the kernel.

I have forgotten about it - there is a switching function in usb-storage
from the time when usb_modeswitch wasn't wide-spread. The affected
devices are listed in "unusual_devs.h".

The bottom line is that usb_modeswitch can't be responsible for the
reported bug. It is not needed for this device, but does not interfere
if present.

I therefore remove usb-modeswitch-data from the list of affected
packages.
