Ah, I now see what the problem is. When the mp3s are first being created, they have the extension ".part", then are renamed to have the extension ".mp3". Banshee first sees the ".part" extension, believes the file is in some format that it can't render, and doesn't change its mind when the file's extension is changed (even though it does see that change).
