I have exactly the same problem
I have an Nvidia GF4 MX 440 since i installed the restricted driver my
resolution cant go beyond 800x600 neither in the ubuntu resolution change
program nor in 'nvidia-settings'. One of the odd things is that in
'nvidia-settings' the monitor is called "@@@"
