I can confirm that disabling networking(not just the wireless radio)
stops the freezing.

I have always been using wireless, but have just noticed that the
networking lights next to my eth0 port are both constantly on and ubuntu
doesn't detect anything when I plug in plugging into a wired connection
and doesn't connect to the internet. I am

$ sudo lshw -C network
