This bug report AFAIK can be closed 
and I forgot to do so. Explanations:

As I said, my GPU is an Intel i915. This kind of low-end GPUs cannot render 
screens wider than 2048 pixels.
When I activated xrandr, the virtual screen was 2800 pixels large. Since the 
GPU could not handle it, the CPU should have taken over from it in a not so 
graceful way, producing this kind of random behaviour.

Well, I guess there is still work to properly handle this kind of
GPU/CPU switch (or just disable compositing...) but that should not fall
into the scope of this bug report. I'm really sorry for the
inconvenience and the waste of time.
