Public bug reported:
Doing an upgrade of a fresh install of Xubuntu makes all applications become
invisible to xfce.
The Preferred App dialog offers no choices (except for "Other..."). Also
buttons in the panel stopped working, and cause the "Select Preferred
Application" dialog to appear (with no choices available).
To reproduce:
Install Xubuntu 11.10 from CD.
Reboot and log in to GUI as the user created during the install.
(everything works fine at this point)
sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade
Immediately the panel buttons stop working and no apps are known to
xfce.
Just to be sure, I re-installed again (re-formatting the root partition
used previously), and the same thing happened.
Googling did not find others with this same problem, so maybe it is
specific to my install. I installed root (/) to a pre-existing
partition, reformatted as ext4. /home was mounted from another pre-
existing partition, which was no reformatted. The home directory of my
test user did not exist in advance.
Tried creating another user with "useradd" and logging in as that user,
but that user also could not see any apps in the gui.
