Public bug reported:

Despite repeated attempts to adjust ATI HD BIOS settings,sound has not
returned. I suspect problem originated when changing setttings from
"AC97" in BIOS,to "HD" ,in terms of front panel port for headphones.
Interesting,problem appeared in VLC player initially as noise over
otherwise normal movie sound..but Amarok player sound initially
unaffected. Later,sound disappeared completely.
