I'm sorry, I couldn't find a /etc/default/grub file.

Anyway, the grub menu entries for recovery mode don't contain these
options. Booting in recovery mode fails, too. Also, I couldn't find any
messages about the encryption password. (That might be due to them
scrolling by too fast, though. Is there some way I can log the output to
some file on the /boot partition?)

I used 3.0.0.13-generic (the latest kernel from the package repository)
and 3.1.0-030100rc10-generic for testing.
