Hi. I just gave Oneiric a try on this PC (I had not used it before). The performance is pretty much the same, but not *quite* as bad. Window dragging is smoother on Oneiric, but everything else is just as slow/choppy/jerky.
I have not tried fglrx on Oneiric or Precise, since I am testing from Live USB sessions until later in the cycle. I do, however, use fglrx on this same PC with Natty which I use as my main OS. Apart from the usual annoyances with Fglrx (tearing, etc) it's a mostly smooth experience. I use the classic session without compiz due to this bug with proprietary drivers: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/764330 11.04's 2d performance works great with the OSS driver on Unity. 11.10 and 12.04 are not usable for me. I've messed about in the Compiz settings and cannot find anything that improves performance. In 11.04, unchecking the "sync to vblank" box in the OpenGL section helped with Compiz lag a little bit. That has no affect on Oneiric or Precise. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/898963 Title: Desktop performance (2d) much worse than expected.
