It worked!!!! I had the rt3090sta package installed, then i removed it and followed this:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1860574 It seems that the new version of rt3090 driver does not work on ubuntu 11.10, then just installed the driver 2.3 which is indicated in the link above.
