It seems my first guess was pretty close! If side scrolling is working then we're definitely in the neighborhood. Does vertical scrolling also work? Give the touchpad a pretty thorough workout and see if any expected features aren't working (it's helpful if you know what features are supported under Windows, e.g. two-fingered scrolling, etc.). Also let me know if you see any erratic behavior.
We'll need to debug the trackstick a bit more it seems. Can you redo the second part of the test (collect dmesg after doing the 'echo 1 | ...' command), only this time rather than wiggling your finger on the touchpad, move the trackstick around a bit before collecting dmesg.
