ok. solved the problem. don't know if it's a bug or not.
resolved by muting S/PDIF with alsamixer I'm not a hw expert, but i guess it's digital out (I have analogue speakers). But I'm 100% sure I haven't done anything with this setting before - and it's a single-user computer. So it might be something that some update or smt switches on.
