Do you have any evidence for a common cause for the problems with
googleearth and stellarium (and potential other packages)? I'd suggest
to mark the reported bugs for googlearth (seems to be bug #851933) and
stellarium (maybe Bug #880334) as affecting you, to subscribe to the
reports and possibly add any helpful additional information you have. Or
report a new bug, if you do not think that your case is already
reported. As an initial step to find out what goes wrong when starting
an application: Start the application from a terminal by typing e.g.
"stellarium". Such reports are much more useful than having a general
"some applications are not working" bug report.
Feel free to continue to report any other bugs you may find.
