5) The default mouse or trackpad acceleration settings may be bad.

@Romano: Click to focus is the only supported focus model in 11.10 (and
older releases?). In the same sense as having a global menu bar isn't an
option anymore, click to focus isn't an option either. You still have
the option to change your system, but not in a way that is supported.
Since you've already tweaked your system, you can tweak it to turn off
the global menu bar, or perhaps try something like what was suggested
here: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/27724/
