This seems something to do with Openoffice and Compiz. It just occurred
again with banshee not on, when I clicked on a footnote in my paper.

If I open in terminal, and scroll over a footnote, I get the following
in terminal:

/$ compiz --replace
WARNING: Application calling GLX 1.3 function "glXCreatePixmap" when GLX 1.3 is
not supported! This is an application bug!
WARNING: Application calling GLX 1.3 function "glXDestroyPixmap" when GLX 1.3
is not supported! This is an application bug!
compiz (core) - Warn: Exceeded max texture size

Launching fallback window manager
Window manager warning: "" found in configuration database is not a valid value
for keybinding "run_command_terminal"
Window manager warning: Treating resize request of legacy application 0x4e000b5
(Bug #90270) as a fullscreen request

~~~~
It then falls back on a version of metacity... or a very minimal version
of compiz....
