Hi, I have now had several skype chat sessions which have not frozen up.
I found the solution after rereading the skype forum postings. I saw the recommendation to take out all audio notifications. I did this by going through each notification, and unchecking the box to play an audio notification. I miss some events, but the visual notifications seem to work well enough. thanks to everyone who answered. I didn't see the suggestion to wipe the .skype directory until today, so never tried that.
