I cannot reproduce this every time, but most of the time when I initiate
a scan from Simple Scan, it makes the "waiting" image. The scanner - HP
OfficeJet 6500A - then finishes scanning and reports scan finished
successfully on its own display. After that, the Simple Scan GUI is
still "waiting".
If I then create a new document, the "waiting" symbol goes away, but
then trying to scan again does not react at all. At this point, when I
try to exit the program, I get a "window not responding" dialogue, from
GNOME I presume.
The next time I start the program, the scan may work. Or it may repeat
the same.
