Public bug reported:

LightDM doesn't offer the options "default" and "failsafe"

Using "default", the .xinitrc is processed together all the services in
/etc/X11/Xsession.d. Using any explicit option, the .xinitrc is ignored
(see "50x11-common_determine-startup").

I have no use for "failsafe", but somebody may...

Note that the menu entries are missing in a fresh Oneiric installation,
whereas are available on my laptop which was installed from previous
Ubuntu versions.
