Good to hear the error message is corrected now.  Of course, the
remaining problem sounds worse.  But it's hard to guess what might be
going wrong.  Having some sort of logs or other details might help.

I'm not sure why your gsd-debug-randr.log is not getting produced; that
would be very informative if it existed.

You could also try turning on randr debugging from the X side.  Run
'sudo xdiagnose' and tick the first checkbox.  Then reboot and reproduce
the issue, and then collect 'sudo dmesg > dmesg.txt' and attach that
file, which should have some details about the resolution change.
